Engineering Film Bulk Acoustic Resonator Devices for Chemical and Biological Sensing in Complex Environments

Professor Andrew Flewitt is Professor of Electronic Engineering in Cambridge University Engineering Department and is currently head of the Electrical Engineering Division. He is also a Fellow in Engineering at Sidney Sussex College. He graduated in Physics from the University of Birmingham in 1994 before moving to Cambridge to carry out a PhD in Engineering investigating the growth of hydrogenated amorphous silicon thin films using scanning tunnelling microscopy which he completed in 1998. He stayed in Cambridge as a Research Associate sponsored by Philips Research Laboratories working on the low temperature fabrication of thin film transistors.

He was first appointed to a Lectureship in 2002 and was promoted to Professor in 2015. Current research interests encompass both large-area electronics, with a particular focus on thin film oxide materials, and microelectromechanical systems. He is also co-Chair of the Cambridge Precision Health Strategic Research Initiative which promotes research on how everyone can live with as good health as possible for as long as possible. He is a co-Founder of Sorex Sensors Limited which is commercialising film bulk acoustic wave sensors. He published a new textbook on ‘Electromagnetism for Engineers’ in 2022 with the aim of making this subject, which underpins so much of the technology we take for granted today, more accessible to undergraduate students, based over 20 years of supervising Cambridge students in this area. He currently serves on the University of Cambridge HR Committee. He is a Member of the Institute of Physics, a Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and is a Chartered Engineer.

Empowering Electronic Noses with Micro/Nano-Technology and AI: From Environmental and Industrial Monitoring to Breath-Based Diagnosis

Prof. Inkyu Park received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from KAIST (1998), UIUC (2003) and UC Berkeley (2007), respectively, all in mechanical engineering. He has been with the department of mechanical engineering at KAIST since 2009 as a faculty member and is currently a full professor and KAIST Endowed Chair Professor. His research interests are micro/nanofabrication, smart sensors for healthcare, environmental and biomedical monitoring, and flexible & wearable electronics. He has published more than 233 SCI journal articles (46+ cover articles) and 50+ patents in the area of MEMS/NANO engineering, and his publications have been cited more than 24,400 times (h-index=72) as of Jul 2026. He is a recipient of HP Open Innovation Research Award (2009-2012), KAIST Prize for Academic Excellence (2021), KAIST Grand Prize for Technology Innovation Award (2019), Top 10 Nanotechnology of Korea (2023), Minister Award from Ministry of Science and ICT (2023), and gold award from KSME-SEMES Open Innovation Challenge (2025).

He is also a fellow (academician) of Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST) and a member of National Academy of Engineering of Korea (NAEK). At present, he holds the position of editor for Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical (Elsevier), a top-ranked SCI journal in the field of chemical sensor technology.
